If there's one thing I’ve learned from my online research, it's that understanding the pay system for after-school childminding at home requires a PhD!
But as parents working shift hours, life is already complex enough... I really need a system that's easier to understand and use.
That’s where Yoojo steps in!
As a UK personal services specialist, we’ve helped many Brits with after-school childminding.
So, I’ve decided to help you with three things:
Share statistics about average rates for after-school childminding
Compare these rates to those offered by other platforms/providers
Ask the top childminders on our plateform to explain how to pay for your childcare.
Finally, you can have a clear view of it all!
An hourly rate is the model we use on Yoojo and many other after-school childminding services.
That means your childminder’s rate will be presented on an hourly basis in 90% of cases!
Here’s what the stats say for one kid:
Average rate for independent childminder:
Average rate on Yoojo :
It’s simple: the pay structure is different.
Independent childminder:
They offer you a basic hourly rate, and you need to add in all the legal allowances (travel, meals, etc.), extra pay, and holiday pay. So, your actual rate will be higher!
On Yoojo:
Everything is included in your hourly rate, so you have no extra fees... the rate shown is what you pay!
With Yoojo, it’s easy to calculate your hourly rate, with no membership or extra fees... just use our intelligent, free form to find out the rate of childminders near you.
There’s definitely a type of care suited to you!
Each type of after-school care has its own rates. Your first step is choosing which type is right for you:
At-home nanny (Yoojo type)
HOW IT WORKS:
Post a job, receive responses from interested childminders, and compare profiles. Here, you rely on ratings and comments from other parents on each nanny's profile (see example here—click any profile to view other parents' feedback).
With an independent childminder
HOW IT WORKS:
You’ll need to find your ideal childminder and do all the reporting yourself. However, it’s a cost-effective option for shared care, which will lower your overall rate.
*Excluding allowances and holiday pay
After-school clubs
HOW IT WORKS:
It’s tough to give an exact average, as fees vary by local council and family income. For those in mid-income brackets, expect about £8.75 per day.
Perfect for Wednesdays, with plenty of educational and sports activities to keep children engaged. Half-days are rare at these rates.
Childminder agency
HOW IT WORKS:
Agencies are everywhere and work much like at-home nannies, except the agency selects your nanny. Here, you trust the agency to choose the right person for you.
You may have noticed that after-school care tends to cost more than standard childcare, which makes sense. An after-school nanny often handles more demanding tasks than a babysitter watching your child during a night out.
In fact, because it’s during the day, parents often ask the nanny to help with:
homework
extracurricular activities
taking kids to sports clubs
teaching a new language
etc...
This type of service can slightly increase the cost!
This question comes up often and is worth addressing.
Only one condition makes a contract for after-school care optional:
Your child is over 6 years old
Your nanny works less than 8 hours a week
Now you have all the tools to choose the right type of after-school nanny at the best price. Start by asking yourself what kind of after-school care you need: occasional or regular? At home, at the nanny’s, or at an after-school club?
Based on your answers, you'll know which nanny to choose and at what rate!
