I take advantage

At Yoojo, we’ve helped more than 350 clients with their plumbing problems... It’s the perfect opportunity to analyse and compile statistics on the average prices charged by the plumbers available on our platform.

I’ve compiled, analysed, and calculated all the information you need to give you a clear idea of the average price you can expect to pay before booking a plumber.

Perfect if you’ve got a repair or installation project!

In this guide, you’ll discover:

What is the hourly rate for a plumber in 2024?

A man has a faucet leak

Let’s start with what interests you most: the average hourly rate.

Self-employed/Small business plumber:

£44/hour

Yoojo handyman:

£20/hour

In addition, for most self-employed plumbers, this rate can even go up to £87/hour for certain specialists doing particularly complex tasks.

My analysis has shown that it’s often the type of task that explains the big price differences.

For example, I’ve calculated all plumbing jobs on Yoojo are mostly small installations or quick repairs. You can see that the hourly rate is much lower!

These price statistics are even more interesting when you look at them by type of job.

Knowing the hourly rate is good, but very often your plumber will charge by the job. This is how we work at Yoojo: you agree on a price and that price is fixed for the job!

In the table below, we’ve calculated the average price for the most requested services, the average time required to complete them, and the average hourly rate.

💰 Why is plumbing cheaper on Yoojo?

You may have realised by now, at Yoojo, we focus mainly on small plumbing jobs, not large-scale projects

We’re talking about small repairs and installations that take around 2 hours and don’t require expensive equipment.

Our strength is also having a network of plumbers all across the UK ready to help you… There are always a few nearby, which means:

  • we can drastically reduce travel costs

  • you can use competition to your advantage

If you’ve been browsing the web for pricing examples, you’ve probably noticed that plumbing company's are much more expensive.

That’s normal.

Generally, they won’t travel for a small £17 job and prefer big projects that are more profitable.

Yoojo fills this need by helping you find assistance easily and quickly, even for small repairs or installations.

Why is there such a variation in plumber rates?

A plumber fixed the leaking faucet

As you’ve seen, rates can range from £15 to over £87/hourthe difference can be huge!

But don’t worry, it’s completely normal. To help you understand which price range applies to your situation, we explain the 4 factors that can increase your bill.

Repairs or installation: a big price difference

The biggest price difference we’ve observed in services offered on Yoojo is related to the type of request. This is also true on other platforms.

In particular, if it’s a difference between a repair or a small installation. It makes sense:

  • Repairs are often urgent: You have a plumbing problem that needs immediate attention to prevent disaster.
Prices will be increased by 25% to 60% because your plumber has to come right away. For instance, a pipe blockage can’t wait and will therefore be a bit more expensive.

  • Installations are not as urgent, and your plumber will have more flexibility.
This is especially true for small installations that can wait a few days, such as “replacing a broken toilet flush,” “unblocking a clogged sink,” or “installing a washing machine.”

The expertise and equipment required for the job

It’s obvious that having a handyman change a tap and having a professional replace a boiler isn’t the same.

Here, it’s not just a matter of time spent on the job, but also of the skills needed and the expensive equipment involved.

The complexity of the job will naturally cause your plumber’s hourly rate to rise.

The travel costs of your plumber can be high

In most cases, if your plumber has to travel more than 10-15 miles, they will charge extra: usually between £17 and £39 for travel.

This is completely normal, petrol is expensive these days, and it’s also a loss of time for your plumber, especially if they have to travel far.

Good to know

You’ll be happy to know that when you submit a request on Yoojo, travel costs are included in the price you agree with your plumber… no surprises, no hidden fees!

The impact of location on pricing

Where you live also plays a big role in pricing. It’s normal for a plumber in London to charge more than one in a rural town—life is simply more expensive in bigger cities.

But wait, there are still more ways to reduce your plumbing costs, and we explain them all below!

How to reduce your plumbing costs?

A plumber is shaking a client's hand after the job is done

Every penny counts when it comes to home repairs, and this is especially true for plumbing, where costs can quickly add up to thousands of pounds.

We’re not talking about cutting corners on quality—just smart tips to save money without compromising!

Is it cheaper to pay a plumber cash-in-hand?

It can be tempting to pay “under the table” and not declare the work, but we don’t recommend this for two reasons:

First, undeclared work as a private employer can result in fines of up to £20,000 and 7 years in prison!

In other words, it’s not worth risking legal trouble for a £50 invoice!

Second, if something goes wrong, you won’t have any recourse. Your insurance won’t cover it, the plumber won’t come back to fix it, and you’ve likely understood that filing a complaint won’t go in your favour!

Conclusion: Hiring a plumber doesn’t have to be expensive

This is especially true for smaller jobs that don’t take much time (around 2 hours).

By using our tips and making use of competition on Yoojo, you can easily bring your costs down to just a few dozen pounds!
