I’m getting ready to move, and of course, the question of budget is on my mind... You might even know this statistic:
The average cost of moving in the UK is :
That’s expensive!
... And that's just an average. Some families spend several thousands of pounds on their move.
At Yoojo, I know that each move is unique, and calculating its cost can be tricky.
But after helping hundreds of brits to move, I have enough information to show you how much your move should cost and even give you concrete examples of prices paid by your neighbours.
Plus, I'll give you a few tips on how to reduce the bill!
Technically, if I want a good estimate, I need to fill out a lot of information and ask for a quote, maybe even have an expert come to my home.
At least, that’s how it works with a traditional mover.
This helps calculate an estimate of the price, either based on the volume of my home or by setting an hourly rate per mover.
Volume, distance, time of year, accessibility, and service level are all factors that will affect the price of my move.
I'll explain everything further down, but first, I'll give you some example prices, because I know that's what you’re most interested in.
Let's get serious: here are some examples of moving prices.
I’m talking about an average with a traditional mover, you know, the good old moving company (nothing like a Yoojo move, which I'll explain below).
However, the following prices give you a rough idea:
Type of home |
Eco Plan |
Standard |
All-inclusive |
Studio (10m2) |
£390 |
£520 |
£700 |
2-bedroom flat (50m2) |
£520 |
£650 |
£950 |
3-bedroom flat (65m2) |
£700 |
£780 |
£1,040 |
4-bedroom flat (80m2) |
£870 |
£1,040 |
£1,510 |
House (100m2) |
£1,090 |
£1,480 |
£1,920 |
The “ECO Plan” covers the basics: a truck and movers to drive it.
The “Standard Plan” includes a truck, movers to help carry your items, and all the necessary equipment.
The “All-inclusive Plan”, as the name suggests, means you don’t have to lift a finger. The mover handles everything, from packing your boxes to transporting your items.
If you're moving more than 300 miles from your home, you can almost double the prices!
Another technique: I can calculate the average price of my move based on the volume in cubic metres (try our simulator here).
This gives a more accurate estimate, and I'll show you how to do it easily.
Start by calculating the volume of your move by converting the size of your home, which is in square metres, to cubic metres that correspond to the truck you'll need to hire.
Use the following conversion table:
Size of your home => |
15 |
20 |
30 |
40 |
50 |
70 |
100 |
m2 |
Equivalent in cubic metres if you have few furniture items |
6 |
8 |
12 |
16 |
20 |
28 |
40 |
m3 |
Equivalent in cubic metres if you have essentials (sofa, wardrobe, bed, fridge, etc.) |
7.5 |
10 |
15 |
20 |
25 |
35 |
50 |
m3 |
Equivalent in cubic metres if your home is fully furnished (complete kitchen, garage, bookshelves, etc.) |
9 |
12 |
18 |
24 |
30 |
42 |
60 |
m3 |
Then, use the following calculation to know your average price per cubic metre:
Concrete examples:
I’m moving a 15m2 studio from Bristol to Bristol. I have 6m3 to move within the same city: 6x£35 = £210
I’m moving a typical 50m2 flat from Manchester to London. I have 25m3 to move more than 370 miles: 25x£75 = £1,875
I’m moving a complete family home of 100m2 from Birmingham to Liverpool. I have 60m3: 60x£50 = £3,000
Once again, these are estimates, but this should give me a better idea of the price range I’m looking at.
If you’ve been paying attention, you now understand that if you see different prices on all the websites, it’s because the cost of a move depends on the types of services you ask your mover to provide.
Well-known example: the more I do myself, the lower my moving costs.
1. Distance
This is the biggest factor impacting the price. The further I move, the more expensive it is because I accumulate rental hours for the truck and driver, fuel, tolls, and sometimes even hotel stays. There isn’t much I can do to reduce costs here.
2. Volume
The math is clear here: the more I have to move, the more it costs! This is because I need a bigger truck and because the move takes more time. It’s the perfect opportunity to sort through my belongings and cut costs drastically.
3. The plan
This is a personal choice. The more I want to be comfortable and delegate tasks to my mover, the more it will cost. To reduce the price, I need to handle some tasks myself... there's no alternative.
4. Additional services
Truck rental with a driver, disassembling your furniture, packing service, lift rental, or end-of-lease cleaning... All the services I request from my mover will increase the bill. If I can do it myself, I can lighten the load on my wallet. (check here the moving services you can book on Yoojo)
5. Special and difficult-to-move items
Taking those garden olive trees or the grand piano passed down from grandma? These are tricky items to move and require qualified personnel, with the cost that this can entail.
6. Moving period
As you can imagine, everyone prefers to move in the summer or on weekends: it’s easier for families and more convenient for everyone. Movers know this and charge more. If I can move during the week, or better yet, give my provider a flexible date that works for them, the price could drop dramatically.
7. Insurance
It’s often forgotten, but insurance for my items against damage can sometimes be up to 1% of the total price... that’s no small amount on a several-thousand-pound bill. I should book a meeting with my insurer as soon as I have a price estimate and a list of items I want to insure.
⚠️ In a hurry?
It’s tough to get a quick quote from traditional movers because they need a lot of details about my home.
I can still use the cubic metre system we covered above and create a price range based on that.
There’s also another option, which is to use our request for moving help between private individuals.
It’s free, movers will offer real rates, and I can even chat with providers for free.
Nothing beats real-life examples to get a better idea.
Here are a few examples of clients who moved with Yoojo. You’ll discover their listing, how they moved, and how much they paid.
💰 Price: £20
⏳ Duration: 1 hour
This listing is a classic on Yoojo. A client needs an hour’s help to transport a sofa. They found help easily for £20.
💰 Price: £90
⏳ Duration: 4h30
Here, this client from Gateshead doesn’t have much stuff and already has friends to help. In the end, they hired a mover on Yoojo for 4h30 of service, for just £90.
It’s really unbeatable pricing!
💰 Price: £245
⏳ Duration: 15 hours
The opposite example, sometimes you have a lot to move.
No problem, this client moved a 150m2 house with Yoojo for just £245. Plus, there’s nothing simpler: I just post a free listing and wait a few minutes to receive offers.
Not getting offers you like?
No worries, I only pay when I hire a mover on Yoojo!
💰 Price: £33
⏳ Duration: 2 hours
The best tip to lower my moving cost is to get rid of useless things (I’ll talk more about this later).
This is exactly what this client did, spending £33 to have old furniture cleared out to make room in their moving truck. Knowing that the vehicle rental is the biggest expense of a move, it makes a lot of sense.
💰 Price: £165
⏳ Duration: 10 hours
Sometimes, you don’t have much to move, but you're going far!
That’s exactly what this client did, paying £165 for a move of 175 miles round trip. If you calculate the price per mile, it’s really cheap!
If you’ve made it to this point in the guide, you should have a good idea of your moving cost... and it’s probably more expensive than you thought!
Don’t worry, I’ve got real tips that will have a big impact on your savings.
SAVINGS ⋍ £430
I can’t do much about the distance of my move, but I can drastically reduce the cost by opting for the cheapest plan and doing as much as possible myself.
Grab boxes from supermarkets, pack all your items yourself, and organize everything so the big day runs smoothly... you’ll save hundreds of pounds!
It’s also the perfect time to call in favours from friends, and if I don’t know anyone in my new area, I can ask for help on Yoojo just to move heavy furniture at a very low cost.
We all know washing machines are among the heaviest items in the home and one of the most annoying to move. It’s when moving things like this that the bill climbs!
SAVINGS ⋍ £430
During my last move, I got rid of all my old things: a scratched sofa, an unvarnished coffee table, a plywood wardrobe, and a washing machine from the 90s... all the big heavy items that needed replacing were thrown out by my provider or sold!
As a result, I only needed a small truck and saved almost £350 on my move. That, plus the £250 from selling random items, was used to buy new furniture.
SAVINGS ⋍ £170-£850
IThere are so many government aids that there's bound to be one for you. Retired, moving for work, student, unemployed... you could save hundreds of pounds or even have most of your move reimbursed.
SAVINGS ⋍ 30%
If possible, avoid summer holidays and weekends like the plague. Prices are inflated because demand is high.
For example, Thursday is the cheapest day to move because movers often have open slots.
The key is to leave a time slot open for your mover, and they’ll offer a date that works for them and give you a discount in the process.
SAVINGS ⋍ 50%
Peer-to-peer moving is still relatively unknown, but it offers incredible savings! And nothing beats concrete examples: I’ve gathered dozens of experiences from clients who used Yoojo for their budget move in other guides... feel free to check them out.
It’s especially great if I’m moving within a 60-mile radius and don’t have a large amount of stuff to move.
By the way, I just need to make a free request to get an automatic price estimate.
