Let’s kick off this price analysis with an interesting stat: the hourly rate.
It’s interesting because, although I usually mention it first in my other gardening guides, in this case, it doesn’t really serve much purpose.
That’s because, in general, the cost of laying synthetic turf is calculated per square metre:

I’ve compiled the data from 100 installation requests made through Yoojo since 2023.

I requested 3 quotes from different companies in Manchester, London, Birmingham, and Liverpool. For each quote, I asked for installations of 15m², 50m², and 200m².
Prices will obviously fluctuate depending on the preparation work needed in your garden (I’ll talk more about that below).

I’ll start with the simplest example: the installation on a small 10m² terrace. It’s a quick and easy job since there’s no groundwork involved—just a quick clean-up of the terrace before laying the grass!
Typically, the smaller the area, the higher the cost per square metre... especially in urban areas like London.

Example #2: Installing synthetic turf on a concrete surface

Here’s another example that’s still fairly easy: installing artificial grass on a concrete surface, but this time, the area is much larger—around 79m².
The result: an installation cost of just £1.30/m².

Example #3: Finishing a partially detached synthetic lawn

In this case, the task was to finish securing a large 150m² artificial lawn that had come loose. This required some additional adhesive work to get the turf properly secured.
Even though the area was larger, the task was relatively simple and came out to just £2.8/m².
Sometimes, things don’t go our way: the weather takes a turn, and the grass wasn’t installed correctly.
Luckily for this customer in the London area, they easily found a provider to reattach all their synthetic grass for just £52.

Example #4: Installing 20m² from scratch

This listing from a customer in Manchester is interesting because everything needs to be done here: weeding, adding sand, laying geotextile, and then the artificial grass itself.
As you can see, the large amount of work involved in garden prep is what drives the costs up... if you can do this yourself, you'll save a lot of money.

Example #5: Installing 40m² when everything is ready!

Here’s a listing that’s the opposite of the one above!
In this case, the customer has done nearly all the gardening work themselves—only the grass needs to be laid!
As a result, the installer completed the job in just two hours, for only £43.

Example #6: Installation with levelling and geotextile laying

In this listing, our customer from Wales wanted to level the ground and install a geotextile layer before laying the synthetic grass.
Once again, you can see that it’s the extensive prep work that increases the cost: £225 for 55m² of grass to be installed!
Notice the job duration mentioned isn’t quite right (just two hours).

Alright, let’s finish on a high note with the installation of 250m² of artificial grass!
On top of that, there’s some additional gardening work to be done, bringing the total cost to £711 for this customer.
But when I break down the cost per square metre, it’s really not that expensive.
That’s normal though, the larger the area of grass you’re installing, the lower the price per square metre!

CONCLUSION: Installing synthetic grass isn’t as costly as you might think
Especially if you don’t have a lot of extra work to do!
