The problem with rug is that they get dirty quickly and are a hassle to clean!
The good news is that it's easy to have them cleaned by an expert... and for much less than you might think.
How much, you ask?
To answer that question, I’ve compiled data from the rug cleaning services booked through Yoojo.
In this guide, I’ll present the average prices, so you can get a very accurate estimate of what you can expect to pay.
The first thing you need to know is that the general rate varies depending on the type of provider you choose.
I’ve made a comparison of the rates for you, without factoring in the size or material of the rug:
Provider on Yoojo :
Specialised Cleaning Company:
For professional cleaning companies: I averaged all the rates I found from specialised companies online. I also requested quotes from five businesses in London, Manchester, and Birmingham.
For home service cleaners: I averaged the 93 rug cleaning jobs completed on our platform.
Let’s dive deeper with prices per square metre.
This metric is much more precise and useful than the general rate!
Here’s the key calculation to know:
Yoojo Provider:
Traditional Cleaning Company:
Small rug: Around 1.2 m x 1.8 m (2.16 m²)
Medium rug: Around 1.6 m x 2.3 m (3.68 m²)
Large rug: Around 2 m x 3 m (6 m²)
Extra large rug: Around 2.5 m x 3.5 m (8.75 m²)
The size of the rug isn’t the only factor influencing the cleaning price.
As expected, the type of rug, the material it’s made of, and its fragility also come into play. This is why two rug of the same size may not cost the same to clean.
My advice: When posting your job for free on Yoojo, make sure to include as much information as possible about your rug. Its material, whether it has long or short fibres, and any visible stains (don't forget the photos!).
This way, the provider will give you a more accurate quote, and you can better estimate the cleaning budget.
I explain everything in the table below:
Rug type | Average price on Yoojo | Cleaning method |
---|---|---|
Wool rug | £6 / m² | Dry or steam cleaning with gentle products. |
Synthetic rug | £4.50 / m² | Water or dry cleaning, often with specific detergents. |
Cotton rug | £5 / m² | Machine washable or dry cleaning recommended. |
Jute or sisal rug | £7 / m² | Dry cleaning, avoiding water to preserve fibres. |
Shaggy rug | £7.50 / m² | Steam cleaning recommended for deep dirt removal. |
Velvet rug | £6 / m² | Dry cleaning or using specific products. |
Persian or oriental rug | £10 / m² | Professional cleaning recommended, often done by hand. |
Outdoor rug | £3.50 / m² | Water or jet washing with mild detergent. |
Bathroom rug | £2.50 / m² | Machine washable or hand cleaning with mild detergents. |
Non-slip rug | £3 / m² | Depending on the material, dry cleaning or machine washing. |

Yes, it does!
Depending on the material of your rug, you’ll need to choose a cleaning method, and this will significantly impact the price you pay.
Cleaning method | Average price on Yoojo | Explanation |
---|---|---|
Dry cleaning | £4 / m² | Dry cleaning is generally cheaper as it uses less water and time, but it’s often less thorough. Suitable for rugs that don’t handle moisture well. |
Steam cleaning (Injection-Extraction) | £6.50 / m² | This method is more expensive as it involves specialised equipment that injects water and products into the rug fibres before extracting moisture and dirt. It provides deep cleaning. |
Shampooing | £5 / m² | Shampooing involves using rotary machines that distribute and scrub the shampoo into the rug. More thorough than dry cleaning but less intense than steam cleaning. |
Dry foam cleaning | £4.50 / m² | Uses foam that penetrates the fibres without saturating them with water, allowing for quick drying. Cheaper than steam cleaning but more effective than dry cleaning. |
Encapsulation cleaning | £5 / m² | This method uses a chemical product that crystallises the dirt before it’s vacuumed up. More expensive than dry cleaning but faster than steam cleaning. |
Hand cleaning | £9 / m² | Hand cleaning is the most expensive as it requires a lot of time and care and is typically reserved for delicate rugs like Persian or Oriental rugs. |
