You’ve probably heard that you shouldn’t transport a fridge on its side.

And indeed, transporting a fridge the wrong way is taking the risk that it may never turn back on!

Fortunately for you, I’ve asked the top movers available on Yoojo to share with you their expert tips for moving your fridge safely.

We’ll explain the mistakes you must absolutely avoid, provide 2 tips for transporting your fridge like a pro, and everything else you need to know!

WARNING:  do not transport your fridge on its side!

Whether it’s new or used you must absolutely avoid transporting your fridge on its side !

Why?

No matter how long the journey, you risk blocking the cooling circuit and causing irreversible damage!

To move or transport your fridge, there’s only one correct position:

"vertically, straight as a pin"

Two solutions for transporting your fridge without damaging it

Two movers are putting a fridge vertically in the back of a van

Do you have an American fridge and a small van?

Don’t bother; it won’t stand up!

That’s okay

We have two proposals to help you solve your transport issue.

1

Get your fridge transported by an expert mover

Did you know that the average price for transporting a fridge by a mover available on Yoojo is:

£30

Let me explain the concept:
  • You post a free ad on our site specifying the size of your fridge
  • We send it to qualified and equipped providers near you, who give you their prices
  • You book the person you like based on their ratings and reviews
  • The mover arrives with their van and carries out the transport of your fridge
  • You pay via our secure platform once the service is completed

Why is this a good solution?

  • Because it’s affordable

  • Because you only pay if you book someone

  • Because your fridge will travel upright, so you’re sure it won’t be damaged

Transporting your fridge horizontally in a car: the right way

Two movers are holding a fridge horizontally

If you really have no other option, it is possible to lay your fridge down in a car, but it’s at your own risk!

To minimize issues, follow these recommendations

  • Try not to lay the fridge down at more than a 45° angle
  • Make sure to lay the fridge down on the correct side (more info below)
  • Do not transport the fridge for too long
  • Wait at least 24 hours before plugging your fridge back in

Yes, there is a correct side to lay your fridge down

To transport your fridge, the high-pressure tube must be pointing upwards to prevent the fluids from the compressor from flowing into it!

WARNING

We strongly recommend not to lay your fridge down, or you might need to call an appliance repair person, which will cost you more than hiring a van!

Have you still transported your appliance horizontally?

Here’s a general rule to follow before plugging your fridge back in:

Fridge laid down For:
Rule to follow
10 minutes
Stand the fridge upright for 10 minutes before plugging it in
20 minutes
Stand the fridge upright for 20 minutes before plugging it in
1 hour
Stand the fridge upright for 1 hour before plugging it in
24 hours
Stand the fridge upright for 24 hours before plugging it in

Basically, you get the idea!

Why do we say to wait 24 hours before plugging in your fridge after transporting it?

It’s more of a general safety rule to prevent damage rather than an official guideline!

There’s a high chance that during transport, the compressor fluids may have shifted and blocked the condenser.

You should wait at least 24 hours for all fluids and lubricants to settle back in the compressor (48 hours is even better)!

Conclusion: moving a fridge is actually easy

You just need to be careful not to block the cooling circuit and, therefore, avoid laying the appliance down as much as possible… that’s the one aspect of transport that is extremely important!

For the rest, don’t forget to properly protect the fridge with blankets or bubble wrap to prevent damage!
