I take advantage

Finding solid information to estimate the cost of moving 250 miles can be a real challenge!

And it makes sense, because each household has its own specific needs.

But that doesn’t mean you can’t get a pretty close estimate.

That’s why I’ve compiled data from 90 moving services done thanks to Yoojo for moves of about 250 miles... and I’ve crunched the numbers!

Here’s what you’ll discover in this guide:

The average price for a 250-mile move in the UK

Here’s what I analysed to find the average price:

  • All available online data
  • 5 quotes from 4 different cities, gathered from well-established moving companies
  • Our own statistics from the 90 moves over 250 miles done through our platform

Here’s what I found:

Average price in the UK:

£1270

Average price on Yoojo:

£671

While a general statistic is helpful, it lacks detail, right?

What you really need is a price that factors in the different truck sizes… and you’ll find that just below!

What type of moves did we compare?

To ensure consistency in our figures, we focused on economy moving rates.

Why?

Because the majority of requests on our platform fall into this category.

Price comparison based on the volume to be moved

The key statistic for estimating your move is a mix of the distance (around 250 miles) and the volume to be moved.

So, I’ve put together a table combining these two:

Volume Average price for a standard move Average price on Yoojo
Move of 10m3 or less £720 £395
Move of 20m3 £928 £478
Move of 30m3 £1133 £568
Move of 40m3 £1609 £807
Move of 50m3 £2091 £1130
Move of 60m3 £2761 £1469
Move of 70m3 £3092 £1763
Move of 80m3 £3401 £1957

💰 Why is it cheaper on Yoojo?

Because Yoojo is a connection platform where movers set their own prices!

You can even ask for help just for an hour... and only pay for that hour!

With hundreds of movers spread across the country, you can take advantage of competition.

Because 80% of jobs are done between individuals, and usually cover short distances (under 12 miles).

Do prices vary based on the time of year?

Did you know that traditional moving prices can vary significantly depending on the season?

Particularly between expensive summer months and cheaper winter months.

I decided to analyse these fluctuations for moves between 230 miles and 292 miles.

Here’s what I found:

Month Price variation Average price on Yoojo
January -3% £599.46
February -1% £611.82
March -3% £599.46
April -1% £611.82
May +2% £630.36
June +1% £624.18
July +5% £648.90
August +7% £661.26
September +6% £655.08
October -3% £599.46
November -1% £611.82
December -2% £605.64

As you can see, prices on Yoojo remain fairly stable throughout the year.

It’s pretty logical when you think about it.

With hundreds of local movers available on our platform, you’ll always find someone to help you, no matter the season.

That’s why there isn’t much variation in prices!

Examples of listings posted by Yoojo clients

A family unpacking after a move

To wrap up this price guide, I thought it would be helpful to share a few examples of listings posted on Yoojo.

I focused specifically on clients who got help for moves of around 250 miles.

In the following examples, you’ll find:

  • The services requested
  • The total price paid
  • The volume to be moved

Example 1: A small 250-mile move

💶 Total price paid: £350
🚛 Distance: 240 miles

A listing example posted on Yoojo for a move 240 miles from Middlesbrough

Let’s start with a very straightforward listing:

- A move with no heavy items
- From Middlesbrough to Ilford
- Only 2m3 to move

Given these conditions, it was easy for our client from Middlesbrough to find a mover with a van to help out... all for just £350!

Example 2: A move from the countryside to London suburbs

💶 Total price paid: £395
🚛 Distance: 253 miles

A move listing example for a 253-mile move posted on Yoojo

This is the perfect example since our client moved exactly 250 miles!

She also provided detailed info about her small move in her listing.

It’s a strategy I’d recommend when you post your own listing. Detailed descriptions always help movers offer better quotes!

Example 3: A medium-sized move

💶 Total price paid: £510
🚛 Distance: 290 miles

A screenshot of a 300 mile move listing

Now we’re stepping it up with a client moving a 60m2 home.

This included appliances and heavy furniture.

Yet, she managed to do it for only £510!

Example 4: A bigger move

💶 Total price paid: £599
🚛 Distance: 205 miles

An example of an ad posted on yoojo to find a mover for 205 miles

Does a larger volume always mean a much higher price?

Not necessarily.

In this case, our client moved a 22m3 load (twice the volume of the previous listing) but only paid £89 more.

Two reasons for that:

- No heavy items
- A shorter distance

As I mentioned earlier, each move is unique... the best approach is to post your free listing on our platform!
